Collection: Hydrogen Sulphide Removal System
Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is a gas which if dissolved in water smells like rotten eggs. Hydrogen sulphide gas is formed from decomposing underground deposits of organic matter, such as decaying plant material.
Hydrogen sulphide from sewage pollution can occur in some surface water, in poorly constructed wells, or in shallow wells close to sewer lines or septic systems.
The presence of hydrogen sulphide may be seasonal and frequently occurs in well water which also contains appreciable levels of iron and/or manganese, or that has a low pH.
Problems Caused By Hydrogen Sulphide in Household Water
Hydrogen sulphide in water is an aesthetic concern that causes a disagreeable taste and odour to the water. While the gas is poisonous and flammable, the human nose can detect it well before it causes health concerns.
One of the biggest problems associated with hydrogen sulphide in water is the corrosion of plumbing metals such as iron, steel, copper, brass, and exposed metal parts in washing machines and other water-using appliances.
The corrosion of iron and steel from hydrogen sulphide forms ferrous sulphide or “black water” which can darken silverware and discolour copper and brass utensils. In worst-case scenarios, excessive corrosion may result in leaks. Hydrogen sulphide can also interfere with the effectiveness of water softeners.
How to Treat Hydrogen Sulphide in Your Private Well?
Several methods of removing hydrogen sulphide from water are available. The recommended treatment for reducing hydrogen sulphide depends on many factors including its concentration, amount of iron and manganese present, and if bacterial contamination must also be treated.
Hydrogen sulphide may be temporarily controlled by conducting a shock chlorination/disinfection of the well or water source.
To treat low levels of hydrogen sulphide with no bacterial problems, an activated carbon filter is generally used. The easiest way to remove the smell of small amounts is to aerate the water or pass it through carbon.
For concentrations up to about 5 to 7 ppm, oxidizing filters are used which changes hydrogen sulphide gas to tiny particles of sulphur that are trapped inside the filter.
