Ultraviolet Light Filters
Remove bacteria from your water
More than 11% of the Irish population sources drinking water from private water supplies such as wells, lakes, or springs. However, the water supply in your home may not be biologically safe. On top of it, when the public water supply is compromised with bacterial contamination, boil water notices make the matter even worse.
Bacteria are found in many wells and occur intermittently throughout the year depending on rainfall. The microorganisms which find their way into a water supply can come from a variety of sources including septic tanks, sewage, animal wastes, or dead and decaying animals.
The best way to treat microbial unsafe water is through the use of UV light filters. Not only do UV light sterilizers provide one of the safest ways to disinfect water, but they also eliminate the need for chemical disinfectants, making them an eco-friendly option. As chlorine or other harsh chemicals are not employed for treatment, it doesn’t impart any bad taste or odour in the filtered water. Due to increased legislation, they are widely being employed in the food and beverage industry.
What can UV Water Filters Remove?
UV water filters are gaining immense popularity amongst well owners who are looking to remove bacteria from their water supply. UV sterilizers are highly effective, safe and cost-effective methods of removing bacteria from water.
UV disinfection kills microorganisms present in water and does not add any chemicals, or impact the taste of water.
Ultraviolet energy causes the inactivation of micro-organisms by disrupting DNA, therefore preventing the growth of bacteria, viruses, moulds and their spores.
A UV water purifier deactivates:
- Dysentery bacilli
- Mycobacterium tuberculosis
- E. coli
- Hepatitis B
- Some viruses

Why Choose Celtic Water Solutions?
Celtic Water Solutions is one of the leading water treatment companies in Ireland. We specialize in UV water filtration systems and over the years help countless homeowners improve their well water quality and remove bacteria from their water.
We offer both whole house and under sink ultraviolet lights, however, we would highly recommend for our clients to obtain the whole house filtration system as all the water in the entire house will be bacteria-free. Picture yourself brushing your teeth, would you want to be doing so in bacteria-infested water! The under sink UV filter will remove 99.9% of the bacteria in your water in the specially fitted tap on your kitchen sink only.
Installation is simple, and once fitted, the system requires no attention and only periodic maintenance. Due to efficient design and the use of high-quality components, running costs are extremely low, and the UV sterilizer requires only annual replacement. The lamp may light for longer but the strength of the bulb will be much weaker, therefore we urge our clients to change the bulbs every twelve months. The chamber is manufactured from hygienic grade stainless steel ensuring strength, reliability, and efficient hydraulic operation. All our ultraviolet lights are fitted with alarms should the bulb blow.
How do I remove bacteria?
First, you will normally need to find out if bacteria are present in the water and, this is done via a water test. We are then able to use the results to work out what size ultraviolet light might be required. There are a few ways to remove or kill bacteria in the water and they are either by ultraviolet light or by adding chemicals to the water, we always prefer to use an ultraviolet light.
Are UV Sterilizers effective?
Yes, they are. UV filters are the safest way to kill microorganisms present in the water without the use of harmful chemicals.
What if I buy the biggest UV available?
When selecting ultraviolet system care must be taken to choose a model that is powerful enough to treat the flow required. If the flow is faster than specified the water passes through the chamber too fast for the rays to effectively kill all the bacteria.
If you decide to just go and buy the biggest UV then you might be doing more harm than good. The reason we spec an ultraviolet light based on water test results is so we can maintain the makeup of the water and keep it as natural and full of healthy minerals. If you use a massive UV light filter you will be killing and damaging the natural makeup of the water and will find it tastes a little plain/off.
How often do I need to change the UV bulb?
We recommend replacing the UV bulb every 12 months as it has been found that after that time the bulb starts to break down and then within a very short space of time the bulb may still be bright but it is not killing anything. Most UV filter manufacturers suggest the bulbs be replaced every 12 months.
You can book an annual service for a replacement for your UV bulb.
Can I change the bulb myself?
You certainly can change the bulb yourself but we would recommend opting for a maintenance program with us. While changing the bulb is easy and usually needs to be done every 12 months, the glass quartz sleeve will need to be removed and cleaned to ensure the ultraviolet light can pass through it. We do not recommend changing quartz sleeves yourself as they are very fragile and new washers will need to be fitted.
